Ludwig Biró
He was born in 1898 in Budapest and grew up in Graz. In 1917, he volunteered for military service and experienced World War I on the Isonzo Front, from which he returned wounded. From 1929 onward, he practiced as a lawyer in Graz until, after several arrests, he emigrated with his family in 1938—first to Yugoslavia, then to Palestine. In 1946, he returned to Graz, where he passed away in 1972.
The First Half of My Life
Ludwig Biró writes about his time on the Isonzo Front during World War I, the darkening of the political horizon in the First Republic, and the Nazi rise to power. With great attention to detail, he recounts the stories of victims and persecutors, good friends, and power-drunk Nazis.
